The aim of the RYA Motor Cruising and Yachtmaster Scheme is to encourage high standards of seamanship and navigation.
The Scheme comprises a series of complementary practical and shorebased courses for which Course Completion Certificates are awarded. You can enjoy them simply to increase your knowlage and confidence or use them as a progression to the RYA / MCA Certificates of Competance which are recognised by maritime authorities worldwide and are only gained by practical examination.
There is no statutory requirement for the skipper of a British pleasure craft of less than 24m load line length to hold a Certificate of Competance when cruising in the UK. The Maritime and Coastgard Agency belive that a system of voluntary education is more likely toachive higher standards of safety than legislation to control and regulate.
Please note that outside the UK an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) is the minimum requirement and heavy fines are usual for persons found skippering a vessel without this minimum qualification.

ICC
International Certificate of Competance
This course is the minimum requirement for chartering or skippering a vessel in International waters. The course syllabus covers all aspects of safety, manovering at both high and low speeds, berthing, navigation/chartwork, rules of the road, anchoring, man overboard and much, much more. It is the perfect introduction to safe and legal boating. In most cases students will reach the required standard in three days.

Helmsmans Course
This is a two day handling course. It is spacific to the type of boat in which the course is carried out and is therefore particulary suitable for new owners of motor cruisers.

Day Skipper (non-tidal)
The day practical skipper course non-tidal runs over 4/5 days and aims to teach pilotage, navigation, seamanship and boat handling to the standard required to skipper a motor cruiser safely by day in non-tidal waters with which the student is familiar.

Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper
Prices for MCA / RYA Yachtmaster / Coastal Skpper preparation are quoted subject to experience. Minimum requirement for Coastal skipper are 30 days, 2 days as skipper, 800 sea miles, 12 night hours.
Minimum requirements for Yachtmaster are 50 days, 5 days as skipper, 2500 sea miles, 5 passages over 60 miles including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper.
Note 1 Milage counting towards these qualifications must be within 10 years of the examination and 50% of the milage must be within tidal waters.
Note 2 If you have a Coastal Skipper Course Compleation Certificate the sea time requirementis reduced to 20 days ( 2 days as skipper), 400 miles and 12 night hours.
Certificates required before examination Restricted (VHF only) Radio operator's certificate and first aid certificate.
Own Boat Tuition
Ocean Drives instructors have the experience of thousands of sea miles, with all types of vessels. So whether you require a helping hand with a sea crossing or maybe a little help to improve your general handling skills we are here to help. Practical instruction / skippering 290€ Inc IVA per day (conditions apply)
School Vessels:
Ocean Drive offers a wide choice of vessels for your tuition. If you wish to combine your tuition with a charter holiday, you can choose the vessel to suit your requirements from our selection of stunning charter vessels. Alternatively you may wish to charter a vessel just for the duration of the course. Charter prices for courses can be calculated by dividing the weekly charter rate by 7 to give a daily rate.
All prices include IVA @16% but do not include the use of the vessel and fuel
